Sitting down with fellow podcasters in Orlando a few times a month to discuss issues, ideas, suggestions, and setups has many rewards. One of those is being able to help those podcasters overcome obstacles – the biggest one being original content development.
Analytics Based Content Development Works
I’ve mentioned my approach to analytical based content development that I employ to create blog posts, articles, and other pieces of written content. That same approach works for any type of digital content – written, spoken, or even watched. It’s the data that’s important. The data is going to let you know what’s working, what’s not working, and what piece of content should be created next.
Helping Out A Local Podcast
A particular show that I work with was running into a brick wall and had no idea how to get around it. They were stuck on not know what to discuss next. They called to chat, hoping that the conversation would spur a relevant niched question from me that they could form an episode around. Instead, they got a lesson on how to always know exactly what the next piece of content should be.
Together we logged into their Google Analytics account and looked at their site metrics. We found that one of their episodes was incredibly popular, while a couple of their episodes had fallen quite flat. When I asked about the lower producing shows, the podcast hosts had plenty of reasons why they weren’t pulling the numbers the other shows did – “I was sick that week”, “That was a throwaway episode”, “We recorded that one in our car”… except for one of the episodes – for that one, they had no idea why it had failed. The content was good, the material was solid, and they both had done a tremendous amount of research into it.
My advice was simple, “Revisit the topic, hash it out again. Come at it with a new, fresh approach.” I’m happy to report that they did just that, and released a very well done episode that pulled in the numbers they were used to getting.
For future episodes, I also suggested they look at their top 10 statistically performing shows, and look for a common thread amongst them. If they find that, they find gold. They’ll know exactly what their audience likes the most, and there’s nothing better than giving your audience what they want.
A Simple System With A Proven Success Record
Analytical-Based Content Development is a systematic approach to writing orignal content that simply works. There’s no magic potion, no super software, no $99/mo club to join. Just use the free tools we all have access to, understand how to interpret the data, and then know what to do with the results you get.
If you’re stuck wondering what to write about next, I’d be more than happy to help you out. Just shoot me an email or give me a call. I look forward to hearing from you.
